There was a very positive vibe in the Arts Theatre, London on Monday 25 April as participants of the Rise Londonwide Youth Slam Championship cheered and whooped each other on as they performed their lyrics, spit, rhyme or rap.

17 year old Fahri Francis-Tudor (above) asked why nobody ever pays attention to the "..one who never picked up the gun". She goes on to explain that slam is a great way to focus attention on young people doing things positively "..not just the rude ones".
Ben Tulloch and Marcell Kane (above) derided the "false bravery" behind street crime in their rhythmic performance.
The irrepressible energy of these performers was matched by their enthusiastic support and encouragement for each other.
"I demand respect" chanted Danielle Miller (16 years old) during her performance in which she explored the issue of being mixed race and asked why the category of Mixed Race only appeared on the National Census in 2001 ".....like that was the year we started to exist".
